The Dublin Coastal Walk offers a memorable outdoor adventure along the picturesque cliffs of Howth, just a short train ride from Dublin city. This tour includes a guided hiking experience led by a knowledgeable local expert who shares stories about the region’s natural beauty, wildlife, and Viking history. At the end of the walk, you’ll unwind with a complimentary pint at a traditional Irish pub, enjoying the warm local atmosphere. This is a great way to discover Dublin’s scenic coastline and get a taste of local culture in a relaxed, social setting.
The full walking tour covers around 5 miles (8 kilometers) and typically lasts 3 to 3.5 hours. While the pace is relaxed, the route includes moderate inclines, narrow paths, and uneven terrain, so a basic to moderate level of fitness is required. The hike is manageable for most active adults but may be challenging for those with mobility concerns or anyone not used to walking long distances.
The meeting point is Howth Dart Station, located on Howth Road. To get there from central Dublin, simply take the DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit) train heading north towards Howth. The journey takes about 30–35 minutes from Dublin Connolly or Tara Street stations. Make sure to arrive at least 10 minutes before the scheduled start time and show your smartphone ticket to the guide when you arrive.
Comfort is key! Please wear sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots with good grip, as some parts of the trail may be slippery or uneven. Dublin’s coastal weather can change quickly, so layered clothing, a windproof or waterproof jacket, and a hat are recommended. You should also bring a bottle of water, a fully charged phone or camera, and perhaps a light snack if you think you’ll get hungry along the way.
No additional food is included in the tour, apart from the free pint at the end. However, there are many charming cafes, seafood restaurants, and fish & chip shops in Howth village, so you may want to stay a bit longer after the tour to enjoy a local meal with a sea view.
The tour is best suited for adults and older teens who are comfortable with a bit of hiking. Due to the physical nature of the walk and uneven coastal trails, the tour is not recommended for small children, strollers, or those with limited mobility. If you're traveling with older family members, just ensure they're up for a moderate coastal walk.
Ireland’s weather is famously unpredictable, and this tour operates rain or shine. In case of light rain, the tour will proceed as scheduled. If severe weather conditions make it unsafe, the tour operator will notify guests in advance. It’s important to check the weather forecast and dress accordingly. A waterproof jacket and good footwear will make all the difference in your comfort and enjoyment.
Absolutely. While the tour includes a complimentary pint of beer or cider at a local pub, you are not obligated to drink alcohol. You may choose a non-alcoholic drink instead. The true highlight of this experience is the stunning walk, engaging storytelling, and scenic views, so non-drinkers are very welcome.
The Dublin Coastal Walk is conducted in English only. All guides are fluent and easy to understand, with a passion for storytelling and a wealth of knowledge about Irish folklore, history, and ecology. A good understanding of English is necessary to fully enjoy the guide’s commentary.
The supplier offers a flexible cancellation policy. You may cancel or reschedule your booking up to 72 hours before the tour date for a full refund. Cancellations made less than 72 hours in advance are not eligible for a refund. If you think your plans might change, it’s best to make any adjustments ahead of time to avoid losing your booking.
